CK Therapy ; thoughtful reflections
This is a beautiful poem by @emmareedturrell. It illustrates just how important it is to be mindful of the language we use and the power it has on how we feel. When we use words like ‘should’ and ‘ought’ we may be limiting ourselves by not listening to what we want to think/feel/do but instead listening to what we imagine others may want us to think/feel/do. Let’s take: “I should have gone to uni I’m wasting time” as an example. This phrase may present with a standard of what society thinks you “should” be doing and is not reflective of what’s best or how you feel for yourself. It’s very negative and self shaming. Try and change shoulds and oughts to more empathetic language and it’ll help how you see yourself. In this example for instance; do you think you should have gone to uni because other society expects you to? Reframed and checked in with your own feelings may turn into ; “I didn’t go to uni because I didn’t want to right now. I’m deciding what I want to do and if and when I feel ready I can apply. It doesn’t mean I should have gone when everyone else did or that I’m wasting my time.” This can seem easy but it can be hard to put into practice or realise you’re even doing it when it’s so ingrained.
