Dialectical Behaviour Therapy | DBT

There are many types of therapy and counselling that can be beneficial for an individual and that can aid them with any presenting issues they may have. This can include anxiety, depression, bereavement, relational difficulties, etc. A particular type of therapy that can aid with these is known as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) which is a type of talking therapy that was developed by Marsha Linehan and focuses on individuals who experience intense emotions.

DBT teaches the skills we need to manage our difficulties through;

1. Emotional regulation
2. Interpersonal effectiveness
3. Distress tolerance
4. mindfulness.

DBT was originally developed to help with individuals with personality disorders, self harming behaviours and suicidal ideation, however more recently it has been expanded to be beneficial for individuals with other difficulties such as  depression, low self esteem, neurodivergence, and anxiety.

DBT teaches the individual to make the necessary changes they need in order to improve the difficulties they are facing but also to improve wellbeing and learn to accept themselves. This upcoming theoretical approach is being recommended by Psychologists and the NHS as it can be beneficial for many individuals.

Many of us get stuck into a pattern of unhelpful thoughts so therapy, and in particular DBT, can help challenge these unhealthy thinking habits and to work collaboratively alongside your therapist to find coping mechanisms that will help you in times of distress.

DBT is delivered by compassionate partner Abbie
