How long will the therapy last for? Usually sessions will be 50 minutes once a week based on mutual agreement. You can discuss frequency of sessions with your therapist to suit your needs and budgets. Some people prefer to have fortnightly sessions or do a step down approach as they begin the ending of therapy process. It is your choice.
I am a parent and I'm worried about my child, can I book a consultation to talk about potential help? Of course. I am happy to provide consultations to parents of children or young people I work with and will often hold reviews with parents on a 6 weekly basis.
What happens in the initial consultation? The initial consultation is simply a first session. It a chance to see if therapy and the therapist is right for you. We can talk about any questions you may have about me, my practice or the kinds of approaches available; e.g EMDR, Psychotherapy & art therapy. If you feel comfortable in doing so we can talk about what made you think of trying therapy and any potential aims and outcomes. And If you choose to we will discuss potential times and days best suited to you for a further sessions.
Is EMDR just for PTSD? No It can be for anyone and not just a recommended treatment for PTSD! It's a great technique to help people with for example but not excluding; core beliefs about yourself (e.g. Im not good enough), distressing memories, dreams, OCD like symptoms, fears and Phobias. Please get in touch if you want to explore EMDR but not sure if it'll fit for you. Or explore the EMDR page on the website. Do I have to be good at Art for the Art Therapy? Quite simply no. There is no pressure to make art in the therapy room. The art is used as a tool to help communicate or express yourself. Sometimes it can be really difficult to use words, especially when it's an emotional experience you're trying to talk about. Using art/imagery can make it feel safer.
Can I try more than one therapy type? Of course, we will look at what you would like to try and see what works for you. Psychotherapy, art psychotherapy and EMDR work really well together as a complementary treatment plan.
What happens If I don't feel like the therapist fits me? We will always try and find the best therapist match for you. It is so important to find the right match to help you feel as safe as possible to do the work you want to do. Sometimes you may feel the fit isn't exactly right; not everyone is everyone's therapist. If you try a consultation and don't feel it's right we can explore other options for you.
