Productivity anxiety and the power of language. Sometimes we think we’re resting but we aren’t if we are sat in guilt or the shame of what we are doing. For instance ; Do you ever find yourself sitting all night after a hard days work watching the tv thinking ‘oh I shouldn’t be doing this. I need to be doing something more productive. I’m just wasting my evening, I’m wasting my time , my life’?. Try and press pause for a moment on those critical thoughts. Instead ask yourself ‘am I enjoying watching this programme right now?’. If the answers ‘yes’ you’re not wasting your time, you’re enjoying it. I know it’s difficult but try and sit with that present moment that enjoyment feeling and you will rest as we’ve removed the guilt or shame of needing to be productive. Reframe it compassionately ; “I feel like I want to watch this programme right now and that is okay. I’m enjoying it and I’m not wasting time if I’m enjoying it.” You may simply be comparing your evening to others or imagining what others expect you to do. So remember; - Take a breath - check your feelings in this moment - remove comparisons and guilt - replace and reframe with a kind compassionate response.
