So often as therapists as we are in a caring profession we get asked “why is therapy so expensive”
We understand it can appear as a high fee at first glance however it’s based on a multiple factors including our worth as highly trained and experienced practitioners. There’s so many layers to why we charge what we do. We’ve broken some down here to help people understand where the fees comes from. 1. Professional membership fees. These are things like the accrediting bodies e.g BACP, HCPC. They’re essential for us to be able to practice. 2. Professional indemnity insurance. 3.Unpaid admin We worth on supporting our clients outside of the hour you’ve seen e.g writing their clinical notes, answering calls and emails, providing reports. 4. Education and continued professional development. As therapists we’ve often done a degree or above and contributing to student loans. In addition we will pay for all of our continued professional development (CPD). CPD is often dictated that to remain accredited we must invest ourselves in a certain amount of hours per year (usually 40 hours additional training). 5. Monthly supervision We must attended monthly supervision paid for by us in order to ensure we’re providing the best care for clients. 6. Room rent and bills E.g wifi , electric, water. 7. Sickness and cancellation cover We often have cancellation policies in place for clients to ensure we can still facilitate future sessions given our overheads. In addition we don’t get paid for hours of holiday or sickness. 8. Additional overheads E.g cleaning, books, printing and giving clients resources or referral forms. 9. Marketing expenses In order for clients to find us we often have to invest in sites like counselling directory or pay for advertising through Google. 10. Qualifications and years of experience. We’ve worked hard to gain the experience and with years of practice better practitioners with more knowledge. Our fees reflect this.
