A common question I get asked when I facilitate therapy in schools is “what is the difference between art therapy and and an art lesson?”
Art Therapy is facilitated by a highly trained mental health progressional ; it is a form of psychotherapy. They are registered with the Health and Care professionals council. Art therapy is not used as a diagnostic tool but a form of self expression and communication. It can be 1:1 or In groups depending on the needs of the people involved. Art therapy can be for anyone and clients come with a range of mental health difficulties and diagnosis. There is no pressure to be ‘good at art’ , it is not a lesson! The art is used as the aid and or tool of communication within the therapy room to help when things are difficult to talk about or explain in words.
